What a fantastic concert. I had no idea what to expect but they really blew me away!!! Since it was a festival with two other (great) artists, they were only alotted a 70 minute slot. They appeared with special guest Paul Frick (of the Brand Brauer Frick Ensemble) and played one (1) single 70-minute long track which was billed as a "live composition" and sounded for the most part totally improvised. I felt transported back in time to when Tangerine Dream stood for largely improvised electronic music and for new, experimental soundscapes. If I am not totally mistaken there were (very) little hints of "Green Desert" inserted, at least I thought I recognized two distinct samples, but I could be wrong. And it truly was one single track, not a pasting-together of different themes. One single theme that was constantly varied, intensified, changed so it never became boring.

This concert was truly classic TD in spirit, albeit with a totally modern sound. No presets, no "greatest hits" but instead an incredible sonic voyage through a world of fascinating sounds, beats and sequences. And I have to say that with the new Quantum Years era, Hoshiko's cello and violin completely fit in. She adds such a beautiful eerie lead to the track, reminds me a bit of the strings of a Mellotron, this sound that seems to come from so far away and gives this wonderful analogue touch to the hard modern electronic sounds produced by Schnauss, Quaeschning and Frick.

A nice touch was that they decided to give a spontaneous encore (you could see that this was totally unplanned as the hall lights had been turned on and the roadies were just getting ready to enter the stage, and they also exceeded their alotted 70-minute slot with this) and to everyone's suprise played a short famous german lullaby "Abendlied" a.k.a. "Der Mond ist aufgeangen" from 1783.

If you are like me and have given up on TD sometime during the nineties...if you couldn't stand bland saxophone, over-the-top acted percussion, wannabee superstar guitarists and if you felt like you were drowning in a sea of album releases with only 1 or 2 decent tracks among loads of kitsch and elevator music, now is the time to come back and enjoy the brandnew cutting-edge Tangerine Dream which finally takes the original spirit of the band to the next decade with a younger generation of musicians who grew up with techno and house music and add their own distinctive style. The next time they play here...I will be there for sure!
