I begin a boxset of Oberinspektor Derrick to try to improve my schoolboy German. I understand there are 100s of episode. May not do quite all of them

I can understand why this was a success but I know I'm missing out on some jokes. It starts Columbo-style with the crime then it's a psychological how will they catchem.
I just resorted to a dictionary to translate the next episode's title "The main choice"? I thought. No. Scene Selection.
It's a struggle

It's interesting how they've aged differently but their skill and the writers' is top form. I hardly ever laugh out load at comedy but always do with this show.
(oh I just greened myself)

The end of Breaking Bad and Dexter.
BB was top class entertainment, witty and stylish with characters you had to have an opinion about. But it lacked the guts to look at the real harm drug abuse does and I'd say that's symptomatic of an industry that is well oiled.
Dexter - had some great seasons but more poor ones, ultimately a victim of its success I think, having to please too many people left it bland.
TV will thrive but is doomed artistically IMHO, just a prop to hang advertising on for the most part.
And while only a decade may pass before the tech is cheap and sophisticated enough for us to have "garage tv" at the same level as broadcast (democratising the industry in the same way 1000s of us knock out tunes at home) I can't see the acting talent being available as would be required to bring that off.
So I think the big players will try to establish their authority with greater definition and higher production values to make the distinction between them and garage TV clear. But I find, in fiction at least, the greater the resolution the more clear I becomes we're watching actors and it's less engaging. At a recent TV exhibition I saw some stunning 4k & 8k def TV but it seems impossible that that will improve drama.
Sorry - off on a tangent.
Not to mention the increasing non-linearity and quality of video games....
