Tangerine Dream

I heard just this past week that the American cable network American Movie Classics is planning to update the classic British TV series "The Prisoner." It won't be exactly like the Patrick McGoohan show, however, in that the people who find themselves in The Village have no recollection of how they got there. In fact, I don't think the citizens are even British spies, though I could be mistaken.

In any event, it isn't supposed to be a carbon copy of the McGoohan series nor is it connected with the upcoming feature film version to be directed by the director of "Batman Begins" (his name escapes me for the moment). He's supposed to start on it after the Batman sequel, "The Dark Knight."

Personally, I'm a little leery of the AMC version that's planned. However, I can't wait for the big-screen adaptation. Should be interesting to see how 40 years' advancement in technology will contribute to the new vision.

You'd think Hollywood would just leave well enough alone, wouldn't you? I wouldn't mind all these remakes so much if they contributed something truly unique to the original concept. Ah, well.

well, getting off my soapbox , nobody would be happier than me 'if' Hollywood produced anything 'as good or better' than the original (insert title here). Still waiting, by the law of averages they'll eventually do it

I agree with you there wholeheatedly. "Batman Begins" was a fresh take on the Dark Knight's origins. "Casino Royale" returned to the original Ian Fleming novel and made James Bond a much darker character. These movies weren't just cookie-cutter remakes with new and improved CGI effects. The stories and characters were given the full attention they deserved.

Forty years have passed since "The Prisoner" debuted on television. Today's world has changed so radically since then that a fresh approach is absolutely essential. (When I first heard about this several months ago, I believe Christopher Eccleston -- the first of the new Doctor Whos -- was tapped to play No. 6. That's be way cool, IMO.)

Until then, however, we'll have to contend with (or, in my case, ignore) such upcoming remakes as "Poltergeist" and Rob Zombie's re-imagining of John Carpenter's original "Halloween."

"Poltergeist" and"Halloween."? good grief!

I can't remember if I watched the first three, (or four), series before losing track of it. I enjoyed it for the most part, but was irritated by the writer's incessant need, to crowbar gay references into the script, at every available opportunity.
