Yeah, of course. Scientific progress has always been an adventure into the unknown, there is no other way. And science is not good or evil, only people are with the applications. Science and ethics are different things...
That seems reasonable but test it with an extreme example - if a scientist worked out how to make a mobile phone into a lethal weapon, as a scientist his conscience would be clear in announcing the details but as a human he would know suddenly he would be arming most of the population of the wealthier nations.
That said I really 'king hate, loath and despise journalists that twist the fact that scientists don't know the outcome of an experiment to present it as admitting the worst outcomes are possible. I don't know who I'm going to meet when I walk down the street but with this logic I should expect to meet an axe-wielding murderer as I can't rule that out.
Mind you - scientists really need to communicate better, they can't simply blame the media…

I dunno BM, that kind of thing doesn't bother me so much as really, I can say there was a big bang and I can give a fair amount of detail 'bout it but really if I stated the universe was blown out of the nose of the Great Green Arkleseizure (H2G2) it won't make the big bang less of a good model nor affect my day-to-day much. More worrying I think is the hoodwinking that companies pull over consumers with a veneer of science and the fact that the leaders, current and potential, of the #1 world power believe in the supernatural of this ilk. Not that I would want to dis any believers in general if a body gets comfort from these beliefs while they're here fair enough because science doesn't have all the answers - though I would take the position that that's mostly because the questions science can't answer are bad questions - eg "why am I here?" if there isn't a reason in the first place science is stuck and the questioner can be left thiking science has failed rather than the need to have a reason is misplaced
must be on the blether-juice again!
