What is the exact nature of the op Colin? Are they fusing vertebrae? I can understand your trepidation, but if it means you'll eventually be pain free, it will be worth it!

Looks like a discectomy Mick but still not 100% sure,even with the discectomy there is no guarantee the pain will be resolved,i have at least 3 discs very worn out and the gel between them has completely de-hydrated and one hanging out on the sciatic nerve,as you no doubt know Mick the back is a very fragile area and can cause some serious misery...

If that's the case Colin, push for a microdiscectomy. It leaves a much smaller scar and allows the surgeon to view the affected area much more clearly. Discectomy often requires laminectomy (laminotomy), which is a riskier procedure and will likely delay your recovery (but you probably already know this).

When i go in for my pre-op med Mick i will be asking lots of questions and will definitely take your advice on board,i appreciate it :wink:
