Chris Franke and TD's Change in direction

Post by 24db »

An interesting comment from Chris (interviewed by Ashok Prema), slightly differing to some fans thoughts on the matter:

AP: Some people say that the TD style and sound was lost after you left- do you agree?

CF: No. The TD style changed while I was with the band, like when we did 'White Eagle' but a change of personnel does not necessarily mean any change- some bands will deliberately pick new personnel with an aim NOT to change any aspect of the music. TD's change could have evolved whether I stayed or not, and it is good to always try fresh directions otherwise it is like standng still- no progress

I remember this interview from Voyager Magazine in the mid 90s.

Given his solo career it's not difficult to imagine how TD's sound could have changed even with him still in the band. Or, more to the point:

Rockoon + Pacific Coast Highway = Waves of Wheels by Can Atilla

Personnel changes are just easy to blame. Technology also seems like an easy scratching post. I'm not sure what the real causes behind each shift would be.

choice?...in TD's own words...the 'idea' of the band was to keep changing

Well maybe, but that doesn't determine the direction.

There's enuff of a trajectory that we can tell TD wouldn't have eg. signed on Warp Records after Paul left, but where did that specific trajectory come from in the first place? By the time of Poland or at least White Eagle it was all still pretty wide open.

Subconsciously influenced by the music Hollywood had them writing? Possible, but that doesn't explain how all the Klaus Schulzes, Robert Schröders etc. went that-a-way too. Yet I can't also really accept that they would've just gone wherever the "scene" was going. Have TD ever admitted to following the example of contemporary artists?

yeah...through choice...Jerome hates all that 'bleep, bleep' EM...his words I seem to remember. And whatever his choice it was Edgar who was at the helm. Jerome possibly thought differently for a while and well...history records he isn't in the group anymore

Well without an axe and map I doubt whether we'll ever know how TD's hive mind works/worked...to be honest I haven't got the slightest interest in how Klaus or Robert do things. Nothing against their music, it's just that I find TD on every level more interesting....possibly because TD are a band and bands have far more about them IMHO
