Xanthosomnium froesei

Post by Michael66 »

The things you can find on Google...

From the webpage Curiosities of Biological Nomenclature: Etymologies:
"Xanthosomnium froesei Sime and Wahl, 2002 (ichneumonid wasp) "Xanthosomnium" is a translation of the synth band Tangerine Dream. The species is "named after Edgar Froese, the founder and continuity behind Tangerine Dream."

Same info on the wikipedia page List of animals named after celebrities:
"Xanthosomnium froesei — Edgar Froese. "Xanthosomnium" is a translation of Tangerine Dream."

So if I get this right, two scientists named Sime and Wahl called a species of wasps in 2002 after Tangerine Dream and Edgar Froese...
Does Edgar know?

I can confirm this, it's true!
Both scientists are TD fans (they wrote in a letter to Edgar...)

Thanks for confirming this, EB! :-)

There's no photo of 'Xanthosomnium froesei' on Google Images - did the scientists provide Edgar with a photo? Would be nice to see how a dreaming tangerine wasp looks like ... :)

most ichneumonid wasps are smallish, yellow and black...or at least the one's in the UK are.

Trying to imagine what would be the result if a TD fan decided to reincarnate as an 18th century botanist, specialized in citrus fruits... ;)
