US 1988 tour

Post by 24db »

Some press from this tour:

Milwaukee Journal, Aug 27th, 1988

“Eddying clouds of coloured smoke obscured the performers and softened the stage’s hard, geometric lines. Cobalt blue, emerald green, and chalky yellow spotlights drew out the emotions expressed in the all-instrumental music, much the way light and shadow were used in German expressionist films of the ‘20s. It was a fantasy sustained by an effective use of the tools of illusion. One moment, the music seemed to issue from a steel blue zeppelin hangar. Suddenly the hangar turned into a cathedral of white light, with the flick of an unseen switch. Beneath the lights and smoke marched music containing elements of drama, tension and release…synthesizers intoned yawning caverns of cold sonic perfection or chimed like a rack of tiny bells stirred by the wind. Computer rhythms percolated in simulation of androids cutting a groove.”

Saw that tour in Boston (actually Somerville). Odd thing is, was that Boston (or Somerville) didn't show up on the venue/date listing on the back of the tour shirts.

Wonder if the gig was an addition after the shirts were printed...

I wish I'd been able to be at one of the 1988 concerts.

Poplar Creek music theatre in Chicago seated 20,000 people. Can you imagine TD trying to book a theatre that size in the US today? Or even anywhere?

I can't imagine Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk or Klaus Schulze trying to either....

The difference now is that certain forums are dominated by a few "fans" (people with something to sell, usually sour grapes) who like two or three TD records from about thirty years or more ago.... and they think they are sooooooo superior.

So it's the forums that brought down TD's popularity? Facinating.

You can make this connection if you want to, I certainly don't.
As I said before, I can't imagine Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk or Klaus Schulze trying to book a hall for 20,000 people either. How about Redshift?

Ralf Wadepul was at the Brandenburg shows in 2005, bit I didn't recognise him until Conrad told me. It's been 17 years since we all saw him with TD, and he hasn't changed 'that' much, just didn't expect him to be there!
