There was a lot of curiosity but also a bit of nostalgia in the air Saturday night at Wilfrid-Pelletier in Montreal where the public was renewing the German band Tangerine Dream, a pioneer of electronic music of the 70s.

Whirring synths, the curtain opens, and contrary to the show 35 years ago in the same room where we could not distinguish the three Germans dressed in black in the darkness, we see six musicians in flesh and bone, three women and three men, including a bald gentleman sitting in the middle of his keyboards and his computer. It was Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream, who founded in Berlin in 1967 and is still the conductor of this group in which cohorts of musicians have succeeded over the decades.

Froese is still a rather quiet character who emerges from the shadows only to play the piano solo on stage at the beginning of the second part, and shortly thereafter, taking his guitar for the only time of the evening time a a little kitsch duo with saxophonist Linda Spa. At the very end, Froese will take over a microphone muttering the names of musicians and wish that his group too soon to return to play for this audience of connoisseurs.

Unlike the classic trio of 70 years for which almost everything went through the mail, Tangerine Dream set for a long time already on traditional instruments too often stifled by the keyboards and sequencers. This is especially true of the game the violinist and cellist, Hoshiko Yamane we really did hear that when she makes a duet with the percussionist Iris Camaa or lorqu play the theremin at the very end of the evening .

For a little over three hours, Tangerine Dream has provided an overview of its history and, recall, keyboardist Thorsten Quaeschning even borrowed their Doors Crystal Ship in a version could have done Depeche Mode. But this endless concert will be shown that especially the German band's music has aged very badly.

Froese and his associates deny it for decades, but the Tangerine Dream current produces a kind of soup at the crossroads of New Age music and a classic rock terribly over beats sampled agreed that the percussionist, she is so enthusiastic , does not add much. Projected on the screen behind, worthy of a planetarium or a faded movie cheapo naturalist, contributed to this unpleasant sense of déjà vu.

The Tangerine Dream of yesteryear had at least the merit to explore other avenues with new tools. One today placed on the eye-the eye make up for the banality of his compositions a little more rhythmic than the average elevator music. We can not blame Edgar Froese to refresh his work only if the addition of instruments in a room like Stratosfear , played before the recall, we do not recall that minimalism has its good points.

Much better reviews, indeed. Thank you for sending the links. :)
I guess the first reviewer might be more into jazz, who knows ? Well, I get his point but what he wrote is also a cliché and just shows a dislike of certain "cold" sounds that TD has used for many years now... "Lift music" has never sounded this way...
I would have loved to hear the long new songs and "White Eagle", and also "Warsaw in The Sun". But it seems Edgar hardly played guitar.... what a pity. They don't play "Hermaphrodite", nor "Everling's Mythical Letter" either, which is aé pity as they are very strong pieces.

Sorry for my silence since the TD show but I was outside my home over the last two days. I'll give you my impressions of the concert this week (I'm better in French so be indulgent with me!)

However in two words, I VERY APPRECIATE the group performance.

More to come...

First, my apologies please. I assumed that because of the festival style concert that the Dream would play no more than two hours. Okay. I was wrong. They play a bit over three hours. Nice.

Second, there are several youtube videos up on utube right now. Some really nice ones IMO.
