Regarding the recent eruption of Iceland's Grímsvötn volcano and how this might effect air traffic to Manchester this week, the information below might be of interest.

Update on European air traffic situation following Grimsvötn eruption

23 MAY 2011
Brussels, Belgium - As of 10:00 CET today, EUROCONTROL has the following update to make with regard to the situation of air traffic in Europe.

No significant impact is expected today on flights as a result of the eruption of the Grimsvötn volcano in Iceland.

However, according to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) in London, depending on the continuing eruption of the volcano and the meteorological conditions, there is a risk that some ash cloud may reach parts of northern Europe in the next 48 hours.

The European Aviation Crisis Coordination Cell (EACCC), comprising representatives from EUROCONTROL, the European Commission, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), States and air transport stakeholders, has been activated in order to coordinate a response that can mitigate any potential impact while maintaining established safety levels.

The next traffic update will be issued around 16:00 CET today.

Guillaume, very nice to look up the vulcano pages :D

Everything might be possible, only a lot of rain can solve the vulcanic ash issue.
And rain will fall next days .....

A lot of footballfans were allready in view ... in Manchester at Saturday
So what will be next ......

Edgar + Co, presumably you're flying over to Manchester so my advice would be to come sooner rather than later, I've a couple of spare rooms available all week, I'm only a couple of hours down the road in Leicestershire so you're more than welcome to stay. I'll even sleep on the floor and give my bed up  :!:

Anything to avoid this gig being cancelled

I'm even prepared to share a tent in the back garden with Iris or Linda or both

hope this gig still goes ahead for two reasons. My first time stay in Lancashire in 17 years, lots of good memories of holidays in Blackpool. Also my first meet & greet opportunity without having to worry about Tubes etc. In God We Trust.....Others pay cash.

Have to admit that I'm a little worried that TD might not make the show due to the volcanic ash. May be they are going by road. I'll be praying that the cloud stays away from the UK.

So far it's looking like Scotland and the far north are the affected areas, Manchester airport has closed flights to and from most of Scotland so fingers crossed.....

:? It seems today that most flights in the UK will return to normal but the Ash Cloud is now hitting German airspace and affecting flights there. Just hope the band get over ok - maybe they have arrived already!! Fingers crossed that all goes to plan. :D

YES - it looks like that the ash cloud is going to be dissolved soon...hope it will also soon disappear from Berlin airspace, but I guess that Edgar is a good truck driver...

Volcanic ash update Manchester Airport

Wednesday 25 May 2011, 15:00
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has advised that the volcanic eruption in Iceland appears to have ceased with only steam now being detected.

The remaining high concentrations of ash in the atmosphere are dispersing quickly with no further restrictions to flights likely for the foreseeable future.

Only two flights were cancelled to Hamburg from Manchester earlier this morning as the high concentration of ash passed over Germany and Denmark.

Although the disruption to Manchester Airport’s operation has been minimal since Sunday, we would like to take this opportunity to thank those passengers who were affected for their patience and understanding.

We would also like to recognise the hard work of our staff who helped to handle an additional 33 flights and nearly 7,000 passengers due to travel to and from Scotland.
