TD to play live with Terry Riley?

Post by 24db »

Did anybody notice this bit in this months issue of the Wire magazine, I know somebody mentioned it over at tadream, but it didn't sink in the first time :D

"Edgar Froese first met Riley at Berlin's Metamusik festival in the early 70s, confessing at the time that Riley's example was crucial to his own group's philosophy; in the coming year, Froese's Tangerine Dream plan to perform live with Terry..."

Not sure Riley's minimalist approach would make for a great live show.

like TD, his music covers quite a few different styles of music. I'd pay to hear the results

I'm not familiar with Terry Riley's work so I've been checking the internet....... and am still none the wiser. I shall watch what transpires with interest.

Checkout a Rainbow in Curved Air, this influenced TD's sound, although obviously Terry wasn't using synths and sequencer, just tape edits and organ phrases.

there's some excerpts over at last.fm

I confess that I've only heard minimalist offerings, with an Eastern influence and I'm afraid it wasn't really to my taste.

I've just checked out an excerpt on TR's site. I can see the obvious influence on Philip Glass's work. It's better than the other stuff I'd heard by TR, but I wouldn't part with any of my hard earned!

a lot of the minimalists are something of an aquired taste (and I can't say I like a lot of it myself), sometimes the 'process' or 'theory' behind the music is more interesting than the final result. I would recommend Rileys' A Rainbow in Curved Air, 'if' you like Reich's Music for 18 Musicians or some of Phillip Glass's more sparse tracks. 'If' the TD/Riley concert is more than a rumour then it at least shows that TD aren't dead and are prepared to be experimental even after 40 years.

I would prefer TD didn't spring a surprise of this nature at the Astoria. If they want to bring on a guest musician, let it be Johannes, or if they're really in the mood to shock, CF or PB!
