Tyranny of Beauty

Post by HYPERBOREA »

Why is this album so unpopular ? It ranked fairly low in the album poll and if memory serves only one track appears in the best tracks poll. Ive always thought there is some decent stuff on the album such as Birdwatchers Dream, Living in a Fountain Pen and Haze of Fame so why is it unpopular. I know some people dont like too much Linda Spa on an album, which this certainly doesnt have. It also has a good combination of synth and guitar which most people like. So why is it unpopular ? Please enlighten me !

Well I like TOB a great deal. This was the time that you could no longer find new TD albums in the shops. I paid about 17 quid for my copy which was dear at the time. The tracks you mention are great.

I 've always had fun with this album. I still play it often in my garage while working on my ATV. :D

Here's what allmusic had to say:
Review by Jim Brenholts

Tyranny of Beauty is one of Tangerine Dream's best CDs of the early and mid-'90s. That's not saying a lot. The group's albums from that period -- and even back into the late '80s -- are relatively weak. And, to be sure, this disc has its weaknesses. However, they are overshadowed by its strengths, and the disc earns high praise. The TD lineup for this CD is Edgar Froese, Linda Spa, and Jerome Froese. Mark Horn and Gerald Gradwohl contribute various guitar performances. Those performances are the keys to this disc's merit. Gradwohl's lead guitar spots play off and to Edgar Froese's lead guitar. The sparring adds clout to the atmospheres. The atmospheres, in turn, build upon each other and create a grand soundscape. The strongest track is "Stratosfear 1995," a redesign of the Virgin era standard. This CD is a return to the basics with polish and tact. It is essential Berlin school electronica
"The aim of the music [of Tangerine Dream] is to paint surreal pictures with musical instruments."

This is by no means a bad album but IMHO the one before TOTT and the one after GC are musically a lot better, but thats IMHO of course

I was surprised that Theif appeared lower on the list than Destination Berlin

I think Theif is a wonderful soundtrack album one of the best IMHO

I have to say Andy that i think that poll is utter nonsense  ..........Forget the Rubycon aspect but some of the placings defy all logic and belief.......Quite a few who voted must have been on board for a very short time or just voted without the knowledge of some of the music or just for the sake of it..............Of course i must point out this is IMHO only  but i know for sure im not the only one to comment on it,and certainly wont be the last
RIP Edgar. I am going to miss you.
