Best 10 Post 1980s albums - Live or Studio

Post by cosmicdolphin »

Any recommendations on the best 10 albums to pick up from about 1990 onward

There are so many. So some guidance would be helpful. I enjoy much of the Pink, Virgin, and Blue Years material, but got sidetracked after that.

Thanks

Could easily come up with 20 or so at least without pause

My 10 current favourites and recommendations are :-

Seven Letters from Tibet
Kyoto
Springtime in Nagasaki
Summer in Nagasaki
Autumn in Hiroshima
Chandra - The Phantom Ferry Part 1
The Island of The Fay
Zietgeist Concert
Starmus - Sonic Universe
Sorcerer 2014

Difficult.

However, trying to spread out through the years.....

Turn Of The Tides ( first Dream album I had bought since Tangram, apart from Underwater Sunlight, as I also got side tracked )
The Seven Letters From Tibet
Kyoto
Jeanne d'Arc
Springtime In Nagasaki
Summer In Nagasaki
Island Of The Fay
Gate Of Saturn - Live At The Lowry
Chandra II
Sorcerer 2014

Lots of good stuff left out though.

Cup Disc wise I would certainly recommend at the minimum, ( if you can get hold of them ) :

Metaphor
Sleeping Watches Snoring In Silence
Bells Of Accra
and the new one - Mala Kunia

Hope you enjoy checking any of these out.

With maybe a couple of exceptions, the ones they've mentioned are pretty good.

Here's my list:

- Mars Polaris.

- Quinoa.

- Inferno.

- Purgatorio.

- Paradiso.

- Finnegans Wake.

- Views From A Red Train.

- The Angel Of The West Window.

- 220 Volt Live.

- Madcap's Flaming Duty. (Not for everyone because it has a singer there, but it grows on you. It's one of their most melancholic works.)

And a couple of extra ones: Goblins Club and Tyranny Of Beauty.

If you like remixes, The Dream Mixes IV (DM4) is great.

Definitely The Five Atomic Seasons are a must, as is The Dante Trilogy (Inferno, Purgatorio & Paradiso), in my opinon.

On a little sidenote: Kyoto was released in 2005, I believe, but I think it was supposed to be from around '83 or something, as it only featured Johannes Schmoelling and Edgar Froese, so it's technically not post 1990.

Warning: Post 1990 records with TD means you have to be prepared for a lot of pop/dance/even trance and techno sounds at some point. Sometimes they sound like really enjoyable progressive rock (Mars Polaris one example), but it's not anything like The Virgin Years at all. Still, that doesn't mean it's not worth it.

As the others say, I could also easily have mentioned many more albums from 1990 up until today, but here are my list of 10 MUST HAVE albums. Only studio albums on this list. At the end I have added four live albums that likewise are obligatory.

Melrose (1990)
Goblins Club (1996)
Transsiberia (1998)
Mars Polaris (1999)
Madcap's Flaming Duty (2007)
Summer In Nagasaki (2007)
Views From A Red Train (2008)
Finnegans Wake (2011)
The Castle (2013)
Mala Kunia (2014)

Live:

Valentine Wheels (1998)
East (2004)
Live At Admiralspalast Berlin (2012)
Phaedra Farewell Tour 2014 - The Concerts (2014)

Hey, I'm going to break the rules again, but Machu Picchu and Mona Da Vinci are both must have's. They sort of complement one another.

Thanks Guys.

I will take a look at the various suggestions, and see which ones are going to work out best, and buy a few of them later this year.

I'm going to grab some of the missing soundtracks before I move into this time period. So my next purchases are Miracle Mile, The Park is Mine, Wavelength, and Near Dark. (My budget won't stretch to Firestarter...why the heck hasn't that been reissued)

After that I will examine the newer stuff more closely.

My wife is mostly a fan of the Virgin Years, and Blue Years. When I finally picked up the remaster of Electronic Meditation last week, she said 'Oh, you bought more Tangerine Dream from 'The Scary Years' as she refers to the Pink Years ;-)

The Five Atomic Seasons (Edgar Froese's masterpiece)
The Four Sonic Poems (many songs that are complete gems, rivaling, if not surpassing, the 70's classics)

...and if you want something from the 90's, either Tyranny of Beauty or Turn of the Tides.

But why stop at 10?

Enjoy the journey...it is a long, extremely rewarding and very expensive one, haha.

He was only asking about post-1990 records and those four you mentioned are from the 80's. Legend is from '86 and Heartbreakers from '85. Plus you only mentioned two post-1990? What the heck? Hahaha! Don't you like post-Melrose eras or what?
