Phaedra in Jordan Rudess' Top 10 albums.

Post by Chris Monk »

I was scanning through Blabbermouth and I noticed this article:

Apparently Jordan Rudess is a fan and lists Phaedra in his 10 top ten albums.

Here's what he has to say:

Tangerine Dream
Phaedra
When I got my MiniMoog, I gravitated toward the otherworldy-type sounds that I could create on it. “Phaedra” appealed to a similar place in my brain that no other classical music or rock music could get to. There is an organic quality they captured on that album that makes it stand up strongly to the test of time. Giving that album a spin would literally take me for a sonic cosmic ride. It was the first time I heard synthesizers and sequencers used to this incredible effect!

I dont know who this guy is but he is obviously intelligent, massively cool, with impeccable taste and style!

Phaedra, simply one of the most stunning, earthshattering, beautiful and greatest albums of all time..............by anyone.

He's the keyboard player with Dream Theater and an immensely talented chap. Check him out on Youtube. Here's a good example:

Occasionally he's accompanied on stage by a large Arrick modular synth but sadly he doesn't use it to produce Phaedra-like sounds. He makes it sounds more like a Mini Moog which seems pointless to me, he might as well use a Mini Moog.

I think Jordan is just having fun with his "popularity" and break from DT's current issues.

In the end, his work with DT is minor and not a major tapestry or part of that band's "metal" preferences, rather than concentrate on the music itself. Sometimes, it feels like the small amount of work that he does is just a filler for spots here and there, and not exactly a part of the whole composition, or a major part of the work that is called "Dream Theater".

It will be interesting to see how things shape up and how his contributions show up in the next TD album without an over rated drummer that needs minimalist lessons from Jaki ... !!! It is hard to imagine that the other 4 members will not add a lot more work into it.

All in all ... I really want to say ... so what? ... keyboard players for bands that play formulaic music are soooooo dime a dozen!
